The Human Family Prerogative

I recently visited Amazon.com to view my sales statistics.  During the month of January 2015, I couldn’t get readers to add any of my books to their personal libraries. To say this news is a downer would be an understatement.  It’s not like I haven’t let the world know about the relevancy of these titles, which are available as eBooks and paperbacks.

The title that I want them to purchase is ADINKRAHENE: Fear of a Black Planet.  That’s my debut novel, the one that has Black people wielding supernatural powers in an honorable and responsible way.  These powerful Black super humans don’t want to exact vengeance on White people for 400 years of slavery and Jim Crow legislation; they ultimately want to get the human race to see that it is one race, not many.  I readily admit that there is a faction of Blacks, the technologically advanced militia group Black-Out, that defaults to using violence to secure power, influence and control, but if I did not offer its members’ perspective, the story would be, well, boring.

The ADINKRAHENE series is all about restoring the human family to its original state, one in which every person on the planet, regardless of their race and ethnicity, worships the Heavenly Father and understands that treating each other with love, honor and respect pleases this same Heavenly Father.  Much like R & B singer Bobby Brown, who boldly sang about having a prerogative, I think it is time for us to adopt what I call The Human Family Prerogative.

For the purposes of these stories, this Heavenly Father is the god of Adam and Noah, Abraham and Issaac, David and Jesus.  I do assert that these biblical figures and deity are Black and not White, and I feel no shame in making such an assertion.  Our collective history has been corrupted, oftentimes for selfish reasons, all to make one racial/ethnic group’s members feel more superior to all of the others.  ADINKRAHENE is my attempt to level the playing field in a fictional sense so people who look like me can gain a semblance of respect in a culture that seems to hate and despise us.  More importantly, though, I want to show Whites that Blacks can push their anger, frustration and resentment aside to work with them to reconcile differences. The altruistic, Black characters in this series know the truth – that Lucifer (i.e., Satan) and his minions (i.e., the Satarians) are responsible for the unraveling of our once unified kingdom.

There are two more books in the series – Fear of a Beloved Community and Fear of an Alien Presence.  These books will get written with or without your support.  I’m a writer, remember?  But I would much rather type sentences and paragraphs on my laptop computer knowing you are looking forward to the release of the next ADINKRAHENE novel.  For you know that prejudice and discrimination are alive and well in America and around the world.  But you also know eradicating this issue is highly improbable if we fail to discuss its underlying causes and effects.

CC Blog Photo 4 JPEGBack in April 2014, I resigned from a full-time position with First 5 San Bernardino after receiving news that my family and I would be moving to another state.  That was a little less than seven months ago, and my adjustment to new surroundings and routines has been going great.  But what some of you may not know about me is I’m now the stay-at-home parent to my 10-year-old son – been doing this off and on for over eight years – and I’m the husband of 21 plus years to my lovely wife. However, the purpose of this post is not to highlight my virtues as a husband and father.  My hope is you will consider investing in my work as sole proprietor of Culturally Coded Content, my creative writing firm.

If you visit my Culturally Coded Content Store, you will see cover images for my books.  Many, long hours were spent writing these books, with hopes that many of you would purchase, read and review them.  I don’t have the backing of a traditional publisher, I do most of my marketing/promotion through social media. And I publish them as ebooks and paperbacks through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing and Createspace because for every copy sold I receive a 70% royalty.  Because I was instructed early on to always have copies of my books on hand to autograph, I also operate a Square Market site.

Since 2013, I have been the host of the popular online radio program SESSIONS with…, heard exclusively on Blogtalkradio.com.  I created this program to provide a space where entertainers can teach their own Master classes about thriving (and surviving) in the entertainment business.  So far, I’ve interviewed actors, directors and authors on air and in person.  My most recent episode (November 12, 2014) featured the emerging and established authors that I met at the 2014 National Black Book Festival in Houston, Texas.  I pay a monthly fee to gain fuller access to this medium.

I know many of you are not readers.  And I know many of you have no desire to learn what it takes to thrive (and survive) in the entertainment business.  However, many of you understand the plight of struggling artists like me.  We wake up everyday wanting to give our readers and listeners a respite from their daily grinds.  And while we create for the love of creating, we also hope that those who partake of our creations will compensate us for our efforts.

Self-Publishing Made Easy with John Locke

20140603-093031-34231213.jpgAbout three months ago, I downloaded crime novelist John Locke’s ebook How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in 5 Months. However, I put it down soon after the purchase was made because I wanted to put the finishing touches on my debut novel, ADINKRAHENE: Fear of a Black Planet. But now that ADINKRAHENE is available for online purchase, I have started reading it again.

I would give anything to sell a million copies of my ebook or paperback. But to do that, in the words of John Locke, I have to identify my audience and then speak to it. While I have identified my audience (i.e., enlightened humans of all hues), I realize now that I haven’t had enough thought-provoking conversations with its members. I plan on doing more of that in the future.

I am looking forward to diving deeper into Locke’s book, and making his system my own. Like all self-published authors, I believe in my product, that it speaks to a generation of Americans who see how the color line is being used by the Corporate Cabal to divide and conquer members of the middle and working classes. But more than anything, these enlightened Americans see how Africans and African Americans are being scape-coated so the white ruling class never has to fully atone for the sins it committed, and continues to commit, against persons of color. A hard pill to swallow, I know. But these types of conversations must occur if we ever hope to build a beloved community of equals.

I have read samples of John Locke’s crime novels, but I have yet to purchase one.  He’s a gifted writer, and I encourage all of my followers to visit his website to see all of the other products he has queued up for purchase.  While I opted to purchase his nonfiction offering to gain a better understanding of his self-publishing system, I’m also smart enough to know that I also need to study his storytelling.  People aren’t just buying Locke’s books because he’s looking kind of cool on the cover to the left.  They’re buying his books because of the content, the way he tells his stories.
