TO BE BLACK: Jason Black’s Method for Reconstructing Black Labor Today for the Jobs of Tomorrow ($2.99 eBook). Click here to purchase now through Amazon.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO GET INSIDE A CHARACTER’S HEAD BEFORE READING ABOUT HIM (OR HER) IN A NOVEL?

To Be BLACK is a conceptual essay series by J. A. Faulkerson that serves as both a philosophical foundation and narrative gateway into the BLACK Novel Series. Framed as a literary primer, it invites readers to step inside the minds and motivations of its central figures before encountering them in the unfolding story world.

At its core, To Be BLACK: BLACK Novel Series Primer introduces the seven guiding principles that shape the vision of fictional social entrepreneurs Jason Black and Mitch Newman, founders of BLACK Global, Inc. (BGI), a workforce development firm based in Atlanta, Georgia. Built on a foundation of cooperative economics, BGI is designed to equip members of the Black diaspora with the knowledge, skills, and capital necessary to extend the enduring legacy of Black African and Black American traditions of activism, community, and kinship. Their mission reaches beyond economic empowerment, aspiring to inspire innovation in science and technology that benefits society as a whole.

The primer functions not only as exposition, but as an intellectual and ideological lens through which the series should be read. It prepares readers to engage more deeply with the narrative stakes introduced in the first installment, The Bear on Our Backs, a novel that poses a provocative question: What if the American Civil War never truly ended, but instead evolved into new and less visible forms?

In that story, Jason Black emerges as a world-class sprinter representing both the University of Tennessee and the United States, poised to compete for gold in the 100-meter dash at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. His trajectory is abruptly altered following a late-night confrontation with a white security guard, forcing him into a legal battle that becomes far larger than a single incident. While awaiting trial at the Black-owned Sojourner Vista Mountain Resort and Conference Center, Jason arrives at a transformative realization about the role Black labor, intellect, and cultural influence can play in shaping the future economy.

Unbeknownst to him, powerful forces are at work behind the scenes. Malcolm Stillwell, an aging real estate investor with political ambitions, seeks to exploit Jason’s case to inflame racial tensions and advance a broader agenda—one tied to a covert effort to destabilize democratic institutions and resurrect the ideological underpinnings of the Confederate South.

Through its blending of speculative history, socio-political critique, and character-driven storytelling, To Be BLACK establishes the thematic and philosophical terrain of the BLACK Novel Series. It challenges readers to reconsider history, agency, and the future of collective progress—before the first chapter of the novel even begins.

J. A. FAULKERSON READER: The Literary Works of a Contemporary, Black Visionary ($24.99 hardcover).

Click here to purchase now through Amazon.

J. A. Faulkerson always knew he wanted to become a published author. So, when he published his debut novel Adinkrahene: Fear of a Black Planet in 2014, he breathed a sigh of relief. One of his lifelong goals had been achieved. The very next year, Adinkrahene was selected as one of three finalists for a Phillis Wheatley Book Award (in the First Fiction category), requiring him to travel to New York City’s Columbia University for an awards ceremony. He did not claim the top prize that night, but he became more confident in his ability to produce literary works that entertain, educate and enlighten.

The J. A. Faulkerson Reader contains essays, poems, short stories and books produced over an 11-year period. Faulkerson shares the trials and the triumphs associated with becoming an author, poet and screenwriter. He admonishes his contemporaries to become compassionate neighbors who have unconditional love and neighborly compassion in their hearts. He gifts adolescents and young adults, i.e., the Young Achievers, with a playbook that connects prosperity to the pursuit of greatness in the areas of Nurturing, Learning, Working and Leading. He reminisces about the five years he spent as his son’s full-time stay-at-home parent, offering fathers and father figures strategies they can use to help their children develop championship mindsets. And his poetry celebrates his Black ancestors’ legacy of activism, community and kinship, how their unrelenting fight for freedom, justice and fairness serves as the perfect model for how citizenries can create more perfect unions.

WHAT IF YOU DISCOVERED THAT THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR NEVER ENDED, IT JUST STARTED BEING WAGED ON DIFFERENT FRONTS?

Book One in the BLACK Novel Series, The Bear on Our Backs, seeks to explore this question by telling the story of Jason Black, an elite, Black American sprinter who is vying to compete for gold in the 100-meter dash at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. But Jason’s preparation for these games is interrupted when he is forced to defend himself against Roscoe Baker, the white security guard that holds him at gunpoint during a late-night response to a neighborhood disturbance.

While awaiting the start of his jury trial at the Black-owned and operated Sojourner Vista Resort and Conference Center, Jason has an epiphany about what he and other black athletes, intellectuals and entrepreneurs can do to reconstruct Black labor today for the jobs of tomorrow. But standing in his way is Malcolm Stillwell, a 76-year-old, white businessman from Manhattan, New York, who wants to use interest in Jason’s court case against Roscoe Baker to sow racial division and hate as he vies for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination. Unbeknownst to Jason, securing the United States presidency is nothing more than a start for Stillwell, as he and agents of the shadowy Confederate States of America escalate their infiltration of the Republican Party in their ongoing effort to use governmental powers to resurrect the Confederate South.

On August 28, 1963, Black Americans came to Washington, DC to demand equal rights and protections under the law. During his rousing I Have a Dream speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alluded to a vision in which citizens of every color and creed – individuals that J. A. Faulkerson refers to as Compassionate Neighbors – worked together to create a more perfect union. But 61 years later, we find ourselves at an inflection point, one defined by chaos and turmoil instead of peace and tranquility.

In MARCH OF THE COMPASSIONATE NEIGHBOR: Selected Poems, J. A. Faulkerson offers twenty poems that speak of the important role the Compassionate Neighbor Mindset plays in guiding the global village toward a more lasting peace. Many of the poems provide stern critiques of individuals who opt to be Conquering Oppressors, as their ancestors’ lying, cheating, stealing and murdering during previous generations has prevented us, their contemporaries, from taking full advantage of opportunities to display the love and compassion that its racially and ethnically diverse members need to grow together as one.

Faulkerson asserts that the Conquering Oppressor wants us to be conservatively complacent so he can maintain a status quo that allows him to maintain a type of self-ordained supremacy that affords his ilk and him privileges not offered to others. But since all men (and women) are created by God as equals, Faulkerson admonishes the WOKE among us to heed the call of the Compassionate Neighbor, her instructions to allow love and compassion to inform our Progressive march toward liberty, fairness and justice.

Faulkerson admonishes his siblings in the struggle to keep devising, implementing and evaluating nonviolent approaches that inspire and motivate all of humanity to create what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called The Beloved Community. In this community, citizens will celebrate the Compassionate Neighbor while denouncing the Conquering Oppressor. They will also have a growing appreciation for doing LIFE (Living Independently Fearless and Empowered) together, working tirelessly to maintain a community that is more diverse, equitable and inclusive, and is built upon the pillars of love, fairness, justice and peace.

True Build Other Stories Book Cover, Gold, 12-9-23

TRUE BUILD & Other Stories ($6.99 paperback, $3.99 ebook).

From the mind of J. A. Faulkerson comes TRUE BUILD & Other Stories, a short story collection that introduces readers to characters caught up in situations that strike at the heart of what it means to relate to each other as Compassionate Neighbors.

Readers will join Winston as he travels back in time, to 1921, Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood District, where over 300 Black residents were massacred by an unhinged, White mob.

Then, there is Christian, a first-year, undergraduate student at Georgetown University, who teaches those around him a valuable lesson about why it isn’t wise to judge a book by its cover.

Fifty-year-old Blessing had reservations about driving down to Virginia Beach with Peta for the weekend to meet up with three of Peta’s friends, all white. But she does, only to share news that tests the group’s ability to be empathetic to the trials and tribulations of a Black woman.

Lastly, there’s Mason, a Black man who is paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair, who must use his words to disarm a teenage, Black thug.

These four stories, taken together, should awaken us to the need to hold each other a little tighter in our ongoing quest to build a more fair, just and equitable America.

NURTURE. LEARN. WORK. LEAD. These are the Four Pillars of Prosperity. To lay the foundation for the kind of achievement that leads to prosperity, Author J. A. Faulkerson believes Young Achievers must:

  • Embrace their obligations as friends and prospective spouses and parents, knowing the quality of these relationships leads to universal understanding, reconciliation and peace;
  • Develop an appreciation for lifelong learning, knowing a scholastic focus sets the stage for future prosperity;
  • Adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, knowing passions can be packaged for value and profit; and
  • Change communities for the better, knowing selfless investments of time, talent, treasure and testimony do more to unite than divide.

Throughout the pages of Young Achiever Playbook: Planning To Achieve, J. A. bares his soul, recounting how an arthritic hip condition, and the end of his athletic career, fostered a newfound commitment to becoming better in all of these areas. He describes the process he used to develop an Adult LIFE Vision, and how this vision allowed him to pursue roles that are synonymous with laying firmer foundations for prosperous living.

Ultimately, J. A. Faulkerson lets Young Achievers know prosperity is not only measured in dollars and cents. It is also measured by the consideration and concern that causes them to care about others, and the righteous actions they take to overcome obstacles and achieve desirable outcomes.
